**VIRGINIA, UNITED STATES — A routine call about a young man behaving erratically turned into a terrifying armed confrontation when he allegedly pointed a loaded gun at deputies and opened fire.**
What began as a welfare check quickly became a potentially deadly encounter.
A Virginia deputy approached a residence to investigate reports of a man acting unusually. But within moments, 19-year-old Anthony Bumgardner appeared carrying a firearm.
The officer immediately recognized the danger.
He repeatedly ordered Anthony to put the weapon down while requesting emergency backup.
Family members were nearby. Someone was reportedly still inside the house. And the deputy could not initially determine whether the weapon was real.
Then gunshots rang out.
The deputy&#8217;s patrol vehicle was struck.
Yet despite the gunfire, the officer did not shoot Anthony.
What followed was a tense standoff involving a firearm, a machete, frightened family members and officers attempting to prevent the situation from turning deadly.
The confrontation ultimately ended with Anthony&#8217;s arrest.
According to the video&#8217;s account, he later pleaded guilty and received a 28-year sentence, with all but eight years suspended.
But the most remarkable part of the footage may be what the responding deputy did — and did not do — while facing an armed suspect.
## PART 1 — A Welfare Check Turns Into a Gunpoint Confrontation
The incident began when Virginia deputies responded to reports of a man behaving erratically at a residence.
As the first deputy approached, Anthony Bumgardner appeared with what looked like a firearm.
The officer immediately began issuing commands.
&#8220;Anthony, put the gun down.&#8221;
But Anthony did not comply.
At first, people at the scene questioned whether the weapon was real. Someone suggested it might be a cap gun.
The deputy could not safely rely on that assumption.
He urgently requested backup while trying to move nearby civilians away from the danger.
A woman identified as Mary Jane was repeatedly instructed to get back.
She expressed concern about another person inside the residence.
The deputy continued warning Anthony that he could be shot if he refused to surrender the weapon.
Anthony made statements suggesting that he wanted the confrontation to end in his death.
The situation was becoming increasingly unpredictable.
The officer continued calling Anthony by name, attempting to gain compliance without firing his own weapon.
Then the encounter escalated.
Gunshots were fired.
The deputy reported that his patrol vehicle had been struck and urgently requested additional units.
The weapon was real.
And the deputy was now facing a suspect who had reportedly fired in his direction.
Despite the danger, the officer continued trying to de-escalate the encounter.
Anthony remained armed and refused to surrender.
The confrontation was far from over.
## PART 2 — Gunfire, a Machete and the Arrest That Could Have Ended Differently

<script src="https://player.vimeo.com/api/player.js"></script>
As the confrontation continued, Anthony moved back inside the residence.
Deputies attempted to determine whether anyone else remained inside and whether they were in danger.
The primary officer reported that Anthony had fired at him.
He also expressed frustration about his decision not to shoot earlier.
Another deputy urged him to wait for backup.
Officers received information suggesting Anthony might have run out of ammunition, but they could not immediately confirm that the weapon was empty.
Then another dangerous detail emerged.
Anthony reportedly had a machete inside the house.
The situation now involved multiple potential weapons, a confined residential setting and family members who remained concerned about those inside.
Deputies coordinated their positions and discussed how to approach the residence.
They repeatedly instructed civilians to stay away from the doorway.
Eventually, officers moved in.
&#8220;Let me see your hands!&#8221;
Anthony was ordered to show his hands and move toward the deputies.
He was taken into custody.
The immediate confrontation had ended without officers firing their weapons.
But the aftermath revealed how close the situation had come to disaster.
The primary deputy reported that gunfire had struck his patrol vehicle.
He described experiencing flying debris and initially believing something had hit him.
Other deputies examined the vehicle and discussed the possible paths of the bullets.
They also checked on nearby residents because rounds may have traveled toward an occupied house.
Investigators needed to recover the firearm, document the damage and preserve the scene.
Meanwhile, the primary officer was visibly upset.
He repeatedly said he believed he had handled the confrontation poorly.
Other deputies reassured him that he had done well.
The officer&#8217;s reaction reflected the enormous pressure of a confrontation in which a single decision could have resulted in someone&#8217;s death.
Anthony was in custody.
The deputies had survived.
But the criminal investigation was only beginning.
## PART 3 — Attempted Murder Charges, Guilty Plea and the Officer&#8217;s Decision Not to Shoot

<div style="padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/1235438312?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" style="position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;" title="3"></iframe></div>
<script src="https://player.vimeo.com/api/player.js"></script>
Following his arrest, Anthony Bumgardner faced serious criminal allegations.
According to the video&#8217;s narration, the 19-year-old was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting into an occupied dwelling, destruction of property and additional firearm-related offenses.
The allegations reflected the danger posed during the encounter.
A deputy had reportedly been fired upon.
A patrol vehicle had been damaged.
And bullets may have endangered people in nearby buildings.
The video states that Anthony subsequently entered a guilty plea.
He reportedly received a 28-year sentence, with all but eight years suspended.
That means the sentence included eight years of unsuspended imprisonment, subject to applicable correctional rules.
The court also reportedly ordered restitution and supervision following release.
The video&#8217;s narrator projected a release in 2032, although actual release dates can depend on correctional calculations.
### Why Didn&#8217;t the Deputy Shoot?
One of the most striking aspects of the footage is the primary deputy&#8217;s restraint.
Anthony had pointed a gun toward law enforcement and reportedly fired shots.
The officer nevertheless continued issuing commands rather than using deadly force.
The video suggests that the deputy&#8217;s familiarity with Anthony and his family may have influenced his decisions.
During the encounter, the officer indicated that he knew the people involved.
But familiarity alone does not establish exactly why he chose not to shoot.
The decision could have involved numerous rapidly changing factors, including the suspect&#8217;s movements, the position of civilians, the officer&#8217;s assessment of the threat and opportunities to resolve the encounter without gunfire.
Under constitutional use-of-force standards, an officer&#8217;s decision to use deadly force is evaluated according to the objective reasonableness of the action in the circumstances.
An officer may face circumstances in which deadly force is legally justified without being legally required to fire.
The video&#8217;s account states that the sentencing judge later praised the primary deputy&#8217;s calm response.
### Why the Charges Were So Serious
Attempted murder allegations generally require proof of a legally sufficient intent to kill and conduct constituting an attempt under the applicable statute.
The use of a firearm during certain felonies can also create separate criminal liability.
Shooting into an occupied dwelling can expose people who are not directly involved in the confrontation to potentially fatal harm.
In this case, deputies were concerned about rounds traveling toward nearby residents.
Those circumstances help explain why the investigation involved several serious criminal charges.
However, the precise offenses of conviction must be distinguished from the charges initially filed.
### What Does a 28-Year Sentence With 20 Years Suspended Mean?
A suspended sentence is a portion of a criminal sentence that the court does not require the defendant to serve immediately, subject to applicable conditions.
According to the video, Anthony received a 28-year sentence with 20 years suspended.
That left eight years of unsuspended incarceration.
The suspended portion can have future consequences if legally applicable conditions are violated.
The exact supervision requirements and release calculations depend on the court judgment and correctional rules.
### The Emotional Aftermath for the Deputy
After Anthony was arrested, the primary officer repeatedly criticized his own performance.
He appeared frustrated that he had not responded differently when the firearm was pointed toward him.
His colleagues offered reassurance.
The video illustrates how a police encounter can continue affecting an officer long after the immediate danger has ended.
The deputy had faced gunfire and survived without shooting the suspect.
But he was still questioning whether he had made the right decisions.
The footage offers an unusually direct look at the psychological pressure involved in armed police encounters.
### A Dangerous Encounter With an Unusual Ending
The incident could have resulted in multiple deaths.
Anthony was armed.
Gunfire had reportedly struck a patrol vehicle.
Family members and other residents were nearby.
Yet the confrontation ended with the suspect alive and under arrest.
The outcome does not mean that every similar situation can be resolved in the same way.
Police use-of-force decisions depend on the specific circumstances confronting officers at the time.
But this case demonstrates how restraint, communication and tactical coordination can sometimes prevent an already dangerous situation from becoming fatal.
## Final Outcome
A Virginia welfare check escalated into an armed confrontation involving a 19-year-old suspect, a loaded firearm and shots fired toward police.
Deputies repeatedly ordered Anthony Bumgardner to surrender.
After a tense standoff, officers arrested him without firing their weapons.
According to the video&#8217;s account, Anthony later pleaded guilty and received a 28-year sentence, with all but eight years suspended.
The body-camera footage captures both the immediate danger of the confrontation and the emotional aftermath experienced by the responding deputy.
**The officer survived. The suspect survived. But the encounter could have ended very differently.**
